Horomore Replacement Therapy Linked to Breast Cancer

Hormone Replacement Therapy Linked to Breast Cancer

Women who undergo hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for the treatment of menopause symptoms face a greater risk of breast cancer. The attorneys at Williams Love O'Leary & Powers represent women with HRT breast cancer.

Women's bodies produce estrogen and progesterone. As women approach menopause, their bodies no longer produce the same levels of these hormones and they experience such symptoms as hot flashes, sleep disturbances and mood swings. To treat these symptoms, some doctors have prescribed a combination of estrogen and imitation progesterone as HRT.

In 2002, though, the Women's Health Initiative halted a major study after it was discovered that HRT increased the risk of invasive breast cancer in healthy menopausal women. The finding was echoed in subsequent studies.

These studies have revealed that the imitation progesterone, known as progestin, is more potent than the progesterone made by the human body. The body doesn't react to progestin in the same way, and it is harmful to breast tissue.

Many of the studies have been focused on the HRT drug Prempro, made by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, but other HRT drugs may also be linked to breast cancer:

· Wyeth-made Premarin combined with Pfizer-made Provera

· Premphase, made by Wyeth

· Femhart, Activella, CombiPatch and Estratest

Safer, equally effective HRT drugs, such as a combination of estrogen and Prometrium, are now available.
